08/18/2008 - New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Houston Astros third baseman Ty Wigginton and New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana were named National League Co-Players of the Week for the period ending August 17.
Wigginton led the National League with a whopping .571 (16-for-28) batting average, a 1.143 slugging percentage and 11 runs driven in while tying for the league-lead with four homers and nine runs scored. He had multi-hit games in six of the seven games played, including three consecutive three-hit games against Arizona.
Santana led the league with one complete game, one shutout and 16 innings pitched while tying for the league-lead with two wins. The southpaw posted a 1.69 earned run average with 13 strikeouts, allowing three runs on 11 hits and two walks. His complete-game shutout against the Pirates on August 17 was the first for the Mets since September 6, 2006 against the Braves when Oliver Perez accomplished the feat.
It is Wigginton's first weekly award and the fourth time Santana has earned player of the week honors, his first since joining the National League.
Other nominees for the award included Houston's Lance Berkman, who hit two homers with 10 RBI, and Roy Oswalt, who went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA; New York's Mike Pelfrey, who went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, and Jose Reyes, who hit .333 with a homer; Los Angeles' Manny Ramirez, who batted .364 with two homers and 10 RBI; and Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer, who went 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and seven strikeouts.
