White Sox' Danks puts streak on line against fading Tigers

Baseball Betting Lines

08/06/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - John Danks will try to keep the Chicago White Sox atop the American League Central standings when he toes the rubber tonight in the second test of a three-game series versus the division-rival Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field.

The White Sox are clinging to a one-game lead over the Minnesota Twins in the Central, while the Tigers are fading at 7 1/2 games off the pace. Chicago believes Danks can keep it that way on Wednesday, since his last loss came back on May 24 versus the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Since then, Danks is 5-0 over his last 12 trips to the mound.

Danks kept his unbeaten stretch intact Thursday at Minnesota, when he registered a no-decision after allowing four runs in six innings of a 10-6 Chicago setback. He will take on the rival Tigers for the second time this season, having beaten them on July 26 at Comerica Park, and is 1-1 with a 5.79 earned run average in four career starts against Detroit.

Chicago ended a two-game slide and won for just the third time in nine tries with last night's 10-8, 14-inning victory. Nick Swisher came through with a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame to lift the White Sox.

Carlos Quentin finished 4-for-7 with a solo home run and Paul Konerko added a two-run shot for Chicago, which opened a 10-game homestand on a positive note and improved to 36-16 as the host. Alexei Ramirez had three hits, including a solo homer, and Ken Griffey Jr. finished 1-for-6 with three strikeouts in his home debut.

Chicago starter Gavin Floyd was touched for five runs on eight hits in four- plus innings for the no-decision. Matt Thornton allowed two runs in three innings of relief and Adam Russell recorded the final two outs in the 14th to get the win.

Placido Polanco clubbed a pair of two-run homers and tripled for the Tigers, who have dropped five straight. Ryan Raburn went 4-for-6 and knocked in a run, while Curtis Granderson belted a two-run homer to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.

Detroit starter Nate Robertson allowed four runs on nine hits over five-plus innings of work in a no-decision. Joel Zumaya was saddled with the loss after he surrendered four runs -- one earned -- in two-thirds of an inning.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander will toe the rubber on Wednesday and has lost two straight starts since winning four consecutive outings and going unbeaten (6-0) in a string of eight appearances. He lost at Cleveland his previous time out on Thursday, when he allowed six runs in 5 2/3 frames.

The young right-hander is 1-3 in four starts against the White Sox this season, and 2-7 with a 6.03 earned run average in 12 career starts in this series.

The White Sox have won eight of the 13 meetings with the Tigers so far this season, including two of three games in the Windy City from April 11-13.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year

Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.

Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.

With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.

Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.

Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
