Jankovic advances, Mattek stuns Vaidisova in L.A.

Jankovic struggled in the first set but rebounded to take a 7-5, 6-2 win over King. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Mattek, a wild card, breezed by Vaidisova for a rather easy 6-4, 6-0 win and will move on to face another upset winner, Olga Govortsova of Belarus, who dispatched of sixth-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova on Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded Russian Dinara Safina of Russia also moved into the third round by routing Shuai Peng of China 6-2, 6-2. Fifth-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva, No. 8 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, No. 9 Nadia Petrova of Russia, No. 10 Nadia Pennetta of Italy and No. 14 Sybille Bammer of Austria also advanced.

Azarenka topped Yung-Jan-Chan of Chinese Taipei 6-1, 6-3. Zvonareva topped American Jill Craybas, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), Petrova got the best of Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, while Pennetta upended Tamira Paszek of Austria and Bammer dumped Stephanie Dubois of Canada, 6-3, 7-5.

Veteran Ai Sugiyama of Japan upset seventh-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland, 6-4, 7-5, and Russian Alla Kudryavtseva took out 15th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, while Meng Yuan of China sent No. 16 Sania Mirza of India packing, 6-4, 6-3.

Other winners were Melinda Czink of Hungary, who dismissed Olga Savchuk of the Ukraine in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, Australian Samantha Stosur, who dispatched of Russian Regina Kulikova, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, and Melanie South of Great Britain, who upended Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-2.
